Health insurance in Switzerland is structured into two main categories, which together offer extensive and flexible coverage tailored to the diverse needs of residents. Here is a detailed explanation of the two types of insurance:

1. LaMal - Compulsory basic insurance

LaMal (Krankenversicherung), also known as basic health insurance, is compulsory for all residents of Switzerland. This insurance guarantees access to essential medical services, regardless of health status or income. It covers standard treatments, hospitalizations, certain preventive procedures and prescription drugs. According to the law, each person must be insured individually, and there are no price differences for the same plan offered by the same insurance company, regardless of the insured's medical condition.

2. LcA - Complementary insurance

LcA (Zusatzversicherung) is optional and allows the insured to benefit from services not covered by the basic insurance, such as dental treatments, alternative medicine, and accommodation in a private hospital room. Complementary insurance offers greater flexibility and can vary significantly in price depending on the provider and service package chosen.

Calculation of Premiums

The premiums for both types of insurance are calculated on the basis of factors such as the canton of residence, the age of the insured person and the chosen deductible level (Selbstbehalt). Regional differences reflect the varying costs of medical services in different parts of the country.

What is Franchise?

The deductible (Franchise) in the Swiss health insurance system is the amount that the insured must pay out of pocket each year before the health insurance starts to cover the costs. Policyholders can choose the level of their deductible, with options ranging from CHF 300 to CHF 2,500 for adults and from CHF 0 to CHF 600 for children. Choosing a higher deductible can lower your insurance premium because the policyholder assumes a greater share of the financial risk.
